Supporting First Nations in knowing &
healing GBR waterways

Koinmerburra Country holds a special place in our hearts. This stunning area spans saltwater Country of the Broad Sound and it’s inner-shore reef islands, through to the expansive coastal wetlands and mangroves, up short steep catchments into the Connors Range. It is home to some of Queensland’s most significant wetlands, but also to some of the highest rates of wetland modification in the state. I share a long-term partnership with Koinmerburra Aboriginal Corporation to grow our knowledge of waterways on their Country, and how we can best support their unique values.

Our role is multi-part. We support this project by:

  • Collaborating with The Great Barrier Reef Foundation, EcoSure, alongside Koinmerburra Aboriginal Corporation to survey water quality in major catchments of Koinmerburra Country, with monitoring already occurring on the St Lawrence Creek section and being extended to Claireview Creek in 2024

  • Supporting Koinmerburra in their ongoing efforts to foster the recovery of the highly unique, ecologically and culturally significant St Lawrence Wetlands reserve in partnership with the broader St Lawrence community and Isaac Regional Council

  • Sharing long-term strategic initiatives that support Koinmerburra Aboriginal Corporation’s rangers to build a sustainable, financially stable and culturally rewarding business that suits their path of self determination. This includes shared knowledges, strong relationships, partnering on grant development and delivery, bespoke training and on-ground support

  • Share our love and knowledge about waterways on Koinmerburra Country through community outreach events, including working with local schools and community, and offering a range of activities at Australia’s longest-running festival to celebrate wetlands - St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend
